responsive architecture
We need massive change. We have the data. We have the ability. We understand the issues.
We need imagination, and we need it now.
To address current environmental and social issues, our studio is a loosely structured human-centered maker-thinker space built upon curiosity, wonder and play. As a studio, we make a difference through the creative and social enterprise of design. The term ‘Responsive’ or ‘Adaptive’ applies to our work and signifies that architecture can better adjust to human needs and environmental change. This topic is quite open and suggests that we conceive of buildings as interconnected resilient systems and that the built and natural environments can be more interwoven.
A few key points
1. We are a design-think-tank that collaborates with other disciplines to advance the prospect of the built environment.
2. We are socially and environmentally focused and believe big problems can be solved through design.
3. We get our work out into the world through competitions like The Global Biomimicry Design Challenge, Evolo, Land Art Generator, ArchiPrix and more.
A proposed directive:
This studio supports alternate modes of thinking and curiosity and is designed to inspire the imagination. As Ken Robinson notes, ‘creativity is as important as literacy,’ and we will open new conversations for idea development and create a climate of possibility. We all have creative sensibilities, though our system has made us fearful of making mistakes. Once fearful, the prospect to make discoveries is diminished. Our studio strives to reverse this trend by being playfully experimental and socially relevant. In this studio there is the opportunity to work individually or collectively. Projects range from individual work to design-build projects.

A proposed directive:
- Combine traditional building practices with emergent materials and technologies to design a built environment that is in net-balance with the local environment.
- Observe nature as a model network of interactive systems that adapts to environmental change and produces no waste.
- Explore and develop architectural strategies to construct ‘synthetic ecologies’ within corrupted or damaged environments.
